By taking a few simple precautions, you can avoid the frustration of a frozen charging port and ensure that your electric car is always ready to charge – no matter the weather. Fortunately, if the charging port does freeze, there are also safe and effective solutions to get it back up.

Prevent the charging port from freezing.

  1. Keep the charging port clean and dry.
Make sure to wipe off any moisture and snow around the charging port. This prevents ice from forming, which can cause the charging port to freeze.
  2. Use silicone
Start by applying silicone or plastic and rubber renewer to a cloth. Then carefully apply this to the rubber strips around the charging port. This will create a protective film that will prevent the port from freezing. Note that some products have a short shelf life and need to be reapplied periodically.
  3. Park under cover or in a garage.
By parking in a garage or under cover, you protect your car from snow, rain and frost, and reduce the risk of the charging port freezing.

What do you do if the charging port on your electric car is frozen?

  1. Fill a bag with hot water
Fill a bag large enough to cover the charging port with hot water and hold it close to defrost it
  2. Dry with hot air.
If you have access to electricity, you can also use a hair dryer or heat gun on low heat. Hold it at a good distance to gently melt the ice. Avoid high heat which can damage paint or plastic.
  3. Park your car indoors.
If you have the opportunity, you can park your car in a garage, for example at a shopping mall or your own for a short while.
  4. Gently press the door
Press lightly on the charging door with your hand to loosen the ice. Avoid hard blows or tools that could damage the mechanism.

Always avoid using sharp objects as these can damage both the mechanism and the paint.
